Do I have the right to discontinue my atrocious service with DirecTV without having to pay them the exorbitant fee of $260 to sever our contract & does their refusal to acknowledge their own horrible service have any bearing on their ability to enforce such penalties? Does the consumer have any rights in a situation like this?

Thomas,

It really comes down to the terms and conditions of the contract with Direct TV. Have you filed a complaint with the BBB? Although they are not members, they do respond to complaint presented to them.

I am precisely dealing with the same problem- took a bundle package from AT&T Uverse, they bring in DirecTV as the TV provider. The installation was June 4th, 2010, signal gone with any little sprinkling of rain. So called AT&T to cancel, am directed to it. DirecTV who refuses to honor the 30 day guarantee- tell me "weather" does cause havoc yet too bad. Hey, I am in Florida, if the reception is bad now, imagine a tropical storm or nearby hurricane. Anyway DirecTV is a huge scam, a PREDATORY business that gets its foot into your door via AT&T and then won't let go, nor honor guarantees. They have no business offering a service in this area if can't provide service as should be. Their CSR's and Supervisors are nasty as feel can do anything they like because of the 2 yr. contract. I did not sign it, yet that does not shake them in their determination to extortion anything they can. Worse than loan sharks and the Mafia itself- amazing they are allowed to operate. I have also filed a complaint at callforaction.org- DirecTV has to be controlled, there are many, many complaints about them, now my new neighbors tell me they too have had major issues with DirecTV. What a rip-off, next step I am going to ripoffreport.com.

I am having the exact same issue. I was lured in with a Verizon package and after the installer left I had to go online to find out why my On Demand service did not work. I discovered that an additional purchase was required to access the internet so that the service I was already paying for could be used. I phoned customer service and was told I had thirty days to cancel. I did so in two weeks as soon as I got Comcast back and now am being billed, and threatened, for a full year of service at $446!! Funny how the installer never mentioned anything about the internet, only that the On Demand service took 24 hours to activate......and their REAL cancellation policy is 72 hours. I am a business woman and have never encountered a company so completely void of customer assistance.
