Is this a scam? I sat through a presentation for timeshare relief. Transfer America guarantees title transfer to get out from under Timeshare obligation. The cost? Anywhere from $2,995 and up. Can anyone tell me if this is a legitimate offer? The pitch sounded good, sounded honest and then when I started going through the Internet I found some questionable things. One, they stated they helped a couple get out from their timeshare but interestingly, that same couple now have a timeshare relief business - coincidence or scam?? I've also read that a lot of companies take the money and then never transfer the title - Does anyone know if this company, Transfer America is on the up and up?

Kimberly,

I attached their BBB report above for you to view their excellent rating. This company offers timeshare transfer services which transfer your timeshare out of your name thereby relieving you of all future obligations.

Check out their report and reviews!

I've seen the BBB report. However, after listening to their presentation and seeing some of the discrepencies in what they said and what is posted - I'm still posing the question regarding legitimacy.

If you have any questions regarding the company why not just contact them? http://transferamerica.net/ 800-980-9129

Hi Marie, there are laws against companies lying to consumers that are pretty heavily enforced. Maybe I'm old school, but by calling a company and talking to a live person I can usually tell if it is legit or not within a minute. As crazy as it sounds, the companies that help people get our of their timeshares (not to be confused with timeshare resale companies who do little to nothing) are probably the most honest companies in the timeshare industry. The resorts are notorious for telling people all kinds of garbage to get them to buy the timeshare, and then the resale companies prey on owners who think they can sell their timeshare for money. Check ebay, most timeshares go unsold for $1.00 or less and charities won't accept most timeshares either. The only truly honest companies I have come across in the industry are the ones who actually help people get out of it. Crazy I know, but why would these companies lie to people? They aren't trying to sell people into anything, they are actually doing the opposite to get people out.

Why indeed?? Isn't that the million dollar question? They do lie, they lie to your face and lie to you on the phone. If a company requests money upfront do NOT do it. If you are selling a Timeshare and someone has a "buyer" - tell them to reduce the selling amount of the timeshare and collect the upfront fees from the buyer - do NOT give them any upfront money, checks, credit cards, etc.

Hi Kimberly, I think you are confusing Transfer America with a resale company. Resale companies will tell you they have a buyer and that you need to pay upfront. I have sat through a Transfer America presentation and at no point do they even remotely try to convey they are selling (or even buying for that matter) your timeshare. Transfer America charges a transfer fee to get the timeshare out of your name. If that isn't something you are comfortable with, then by all means keep the timeshare. But the fact is there are thousands upon thousands of people who are in a position where they can no longer pay for their annual maintenance fees and thankfully there are companies who can help them. Transfer America isn't the only one, but they do stand by what their service and are a reputable company.

You said "Transfer America charges a transfer fee to get the timeshare out of your name." Do you mean you get money for your timeshare, or do you mean you pay them the transfer fee just to have someone take your timeshare from you?

Carmen - I'm not sure I mentioned a "transfer fee". However, there is a substantial fee Transfer America charges to transfer your name off the Timeshare Deed. So in theory, this means - all the money you have paid for your timeshare and the usage should be over. Transfer America is "selling" their services to transfer your Timeshare title out of your name. Supposedly, this would mean you pay a fee and you no longer own your timeshare so would not need to continue with the maintenance fee. Now, I have heard "rumors" that sometimes the transfer of title does not take place and the Timeshare company would come back to the original owner and demand payment of back maintenance fees as well as penalties. I'm not saying that would happen with Transfer America but it was enough of a concern for me to NOT go through with the deal/service they were "offering". Bottom line to your question is: NO, you would not get a cent for your timeshare. You would pay to have the timeshare ownership transferred out of your name. I wish you luck in whatever you decide to do.

IMHO, dont give anyone money. Talk to your timeshare resort CS Department OR an attorney about this. Find out who does the license transfer...AND LOOK UP THEIR LICENSE TO FIND OUT IF IT IS VALID...Title Work must be done by an 1) Attorney or 2) Licensed Title Insurance Agent. All of which you can look up before you give someone money. Dont stop there. Look that person up online and contact the number or website provided by THE STATE WEBSITE and see if that is the person doing the work and NOT JUST someone using their name. IT HAPPENS...been through it, learned the lesson...dont let it be you next. If you don't want your timeshare...YOU CALL SOMEONE, dont wait for them to call you.

If anyone still interested: Transfer America, so called Freedom from Timeshare Ownership, is complete fraud. They have been transferring my timeshare since November, 2010. They have not paid my maintenance fees for 2012, and now I have written to California Attorney General Office, California Consumer Department, Real Estate Commissioner and president of Transfer America. In a week I have a meeting with attorney to discuss opening a case against Transfer America.

Timeshare Relief is a company based on Torrance, California. They claim to have successfully helped over 85,000 timeshare scam victims, and to provide their clients a 100% guaranteed solution. They help their clients, by removing their names from the contract and by transferring the title to someone else. Timeshare relief is, per se, a timeshare transfer company. According to the BBB, there is an alert the business and a total of 17 complaints since March 10, 2013. The company is NOT BBB accredited. Due to the infraction of several laws, in 2012, Timeshare Relief had to pay a penalty of $13,950 USD: http://www.timesharescam.com/blog/174-timeshare-relief/
